Places to eat...

On campus...
Of course there are the university cafeterias located in Eggers, Law, and the Shine Student Center

but,
numerous fantastic restaurants line Marshall St. and vicinity. Some of my favorites are

The Unique Tea House Marshall St. - a quaint sushi and tea house. Try the Peanut Black Tea w/tapioca. The sushi comes from the Blue Monkey.

The Blue Monkey Marshall St. - Great sushi right on campus with a cozy atmosphere.

Varsity Pizza Crouse Ave. - Pizza in the front, sandwiches and other entrees in the back. Vintage varsity sports pictures line the walls. A fun place to grab a quick lunch.

Baja Burrito Crouse Ave (head down the alley just north of Brugger's Bagels) - come hungry! This is one of my favorite places to eat.

Samrat Crouse Ave. (corner of Crouse and Adams) - authentic Indian food, another of my favorite places!

Mok Hwa Crouse Ave. (corner of Crouse and Adams, same building as Samrat) - great Korean food. Another favorite.

King David's Marshall St. - Middle Eastern and Greek foods.

Aladin's Natural Eatery Marshall St. - vegetarian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Excellent.

Panda West  Marshall St. - I don't think this needs an explanation. Another excellent place to sit down and grab a bite.

Faegan's Cafe and Pub Crouse Ave. - I think this is where the PIRA guys and ladies will hang. Good pub food and a great place to quaff a beer or two.

Off campus...

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - 246 W. Willow St.

The original!! Be prepared for a 30 - 60 minute wait during dinner. It's well worth the wait! Go north on Crouse. turn left onto Harrison, right onto Salina, left onto Jefferson, veer right at the MOST, turn right onto Franklin. Proceed on Franklin until you see the glowing neon Dinosaur Bar-B-Que lights on the corner of Franklin and Willow.  $

Asti - 411 N. Salina St.

The gateway to Little Italy, Asti serves great Italian in a fabuloso atmosphere. One of my favorites!  $$

Pastabilities in Armory Square

which is the old warehouse district in downtown Syracuse that is now converted into the region's largest district of restaurants and bars. Pastabilities was the first restaurant to locate there, and has innovative, Italian-inspired cuisine and an attractive, informal dining room. $$

Lemon Grass in Armory Square

is an elegant, white tablecloth Thai restaurant with a spectacular wine list and desserts best described as

sculptures. $$$

Ambrosia in Armory Square,

has a large collection of sushi, fish, and continental dishes, and a dining room with the most contemporary look in Syracuse. Al fresco dining is a possibility in good weather. $$$

Ohm in Armory Square

is an elegant bar inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. Both Gustav Stickley, and his brothers, worked in Syracuse. There is an attractive inner courtyard.

Kitty Hoynes in Armory Square

is said to serve the best conserved and the best pulled Guinness draft in Syracuse. What else needs to be said?

Mirbeau Inn and Spa 851 W. Genesee St. Skaneateles

Located in picturesque Skaneateles, this four diamond inn and spa also features Giverny, a four diamond restaurant, and gorgeous gardens. This is fine dining and fine living at its best. Spouses, a day spa package will be a great way to spend the day while your partner ‘works’.  $$$$

Places of interest...

Armory Square - trendy shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and of course, bars and pubs!

Syracuse Suds Factory, PJ Dorseys, and Blue Tusk all serve great beer! Peruse

the unique shops along Walnut St., Franklin St., Clinton St., Jefferson St. and Fayette St.

The Museum of Science and Technology (MOST)

Show your AAPT meeting badge and get a great discount on a museum exhibits and IMAX pass. Be sure to check out Cosmic Connections, an exhibit designed and build by Syracuse University Physics and School of Design faculty, staff, and students. See if you can count all the dots in the Book of a Billion! $7 gets you and your guests an all day pass and an IMAX movie during normal operating hours. Check their website for more details.

The Erie Canal Museum

The Erie Canal Museum near downtown Syracuse was originally a weighlock building on the Canal; tolls were charged by the freighted weight of the canal boats. The museum features a excellent, walk-through reconstruction of a canal boat and a variety of interesting exhibits about the Canal and 19th Century life. See also Old Erie Canal State Park.

The Everson Museum of Art

Syracuse's Everson Museum of Art was designed in the 60's by I. M. Pei, who went on to design the National Gallery extension and the glass pyramid at the Louvre. The Museum has an outstanding collection of ceramics, a wide-ranging collection of American art, and a fine exhibit of Arts & Crafts furniture by Gustav Stickley (who worked in Syracuse). Bring the kids to the hands-on center downstairs, and say hi to George while you're there.

Carousel Center

If you need to get to a mall to do some shopping, this is where you'll want to go.

Green Lakes State Park

Very awesome park with a beach, hiking and biking trails, a Frisbee golf course, and an 18 hole Robert Trent Jones Golf course. This unique park features two unusual, emerald green glacial lakes as well as the Tuliptree Cathedral, which is part of the largest old growth forest in Central New York. This is probably my favorite running place, and is only a 20 minute drive from campus in Fayetteville.

Onondaga Lake Park

Another of my favorite running places, Onondaga Lake Park is a great place to walk, run, bike, or inline skate on a vehicle-free paved road. Bring your skateboard to the skate park. Visit the Salt Museum (admission is free!) and learn why Syracuse is nicknamed the Salt City. Don't go swimming here, though, yuck! While you're there, grab a hot dog or coney (pronounced koo-nee) across the street at Heid's. The white birch beer is awesome!

Old Erie Canal State Historic Park

Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo are all major cities today because of the construction of the Erie Canal in the 1820's. The Old Erie Canal State Park preserves 36 miles of the old canal from Syracuse east to Rome; the park starts in DeWitt, about 4 miles east of Syracuse University. A mile's walk on the old towpath will show you two aqueducts (where the canal crosses Buttermilk and Limestone Creeks), a widewater (where colonies of canal boats wintered, permitting canal brats to go to school), and a 19th Century iron bridge (but not a "low bridge") across the canal.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park

Lions and tigers and bears – oh my!! And baby golden lion tamarins (born 6/7), and penguin chicks (born 4/27) and elephants and…, you get the idea. The zoo is a great place to visit!

Turning Stone Resort and Casino

If golf is your thing, then this is the place to go. The B.C. open is changing venues to the Atunyote Golf Club at Turning Stone because of flooding in the Binghamton/Endicott area. This PGA Tour stop will be played from 7/17 – 7/23. The casino is always happy to let you try to win some money, but I think physicists know the odds a little better. That’s why our conference doesn’t go to Vega too often! Be sure to check out the Showroom; big name acts like Johnny Mathis, Larry the Cable Guy, and Wayne Newton will be performing during the AAPT conference..
