This is the LHCb detector, a large particle physics detector being
constructed by the LHCb collaboration.
It is one of the four major experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
The other three experiments are ATLAS,
CMS and ALICE.
A brief summary of the experiment/detector is given below.

The LHCb detector is being designed and built with the aim of collecting
large samples of B decays in which to search for new physics in CP violation and
in rare B decays.
The detector consists of
 | a precision silicon vertex detector (VELO); |
 | a tracking system consisting of straw tubes and silicon strips (TT, T1,
T2, & T3) |
 | two Ring Imaging Cherenkob detectors for particle identification (RICH1
& RICH2) |
 | a large dipole analysis magnet |
 | An electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) and a scintillating pad/preshower
detector (SPD/PS) |
 | A hadronic calorimeter |
 | a muon system |
The detector uses a three level trigger system, L0, L1 and HLT:
 | L0: Search for single muon or dimuon events, or high transverse energy in
ECAL or HCAL |
 | L1: Perform 2D tracking in VELO. For tracks involved in the L0 trigger, or
tracks with a large impact parameter to interaction point, we perform 3D
tracking. Search for evidence of displaced vertices. |
 | HLT (High Level Trigger): Full software pattern recognition, improve
momentum measurements, search for inclusive B decay channels as well as a
number of exclusive final states. |

web site.
